Absolute Minimum Charges (AMC) help protect a carrier from agreeing to move a shipment that they’d lose money on. As a rule, an LTL shipping carrier can’t go below this minimum charge.

When LTL shipping carriers that are more regionally focused ship goods over a long distance, they’ll often transfer the shipment from carrier to carrier. Each of these carriers will have an Absolute Minimum Charge associated with the shipment, meaning that even if they’re only using a carrier to move it to the next carrier across a local region, you’ll still get their minimum charge racked up.

Shipping Discounts

On top of this, there are sometimes shipping discounts that are available for shipping goods with a single carrier. When you ship in short spurts with multiple carriers, you won’t find any discounts no matter how good of a customer you are. This is because discounts for many legs of the journey would bring the cost below the Absolute Minimum Charge.

Why is it like this? Many LTL shipments don’t need to go around the world, or even several states over. Many LTL shipments that are made can be handled by a company or don’t require special accommodations.
