Importance of Packaging
The best way to avoid damage to freight is to ensure it is properly packaged for the specific mode of transportation. It is about selecting the right package type and size for your freight. The wrong carton type can undermine your best efforts as well. Some corrugate is simply not meant for stacking.
Product packaging is the smallest cost segment in the supply chain, which is why it does not make sense to scrimp on packaging materials that may cost you significantly in the end.
Pallets will not prevent damage if the content’s weight is not evenly distributed. Packages should be stacked as closely together as possible. You should avoid empty pockets from mismatched package shapes. Avoid product that hangs out over the edge of the pallet as well. When this happens, it reduces box strength by up to 32% and increases the odds of damage for over-hanging portions.
One of the biggest solutions to avoid damage is custom crating. For larger items it offers the benefit of getting the exact shape and size needed for maximum protection. It allows for more custom padding and security, including protection from moisture and temperature. Custom wooden crates are built to fit anything securely and safely, and because the sides are bolted you can remove them at arrival and slide an item out versus lifting it out.
Questions to ask before your shipment is picked up:
- Can a forklift easily get under this shipment?
- Is it hanging over the sides of the pallet?
- Is this top heavy and likely to tip over?
- Is this properly secured (strapped/bolted) to the pallet?
