Tanger-Med Port went into service in 2007, but it’s still modernizing and expanding. The port has prime position on the Strait of Gibraltar, with the backing and investment of a country hungry to up its share of the international cargo business. The ports just received the largest tandem-lift container cranes in the world.
The three cranes are 144 meters tall and weigh 2,500 tons each. They’re engineered to handle loading and unloading vessels that carry 22,000 TEU or more. Remote operation means they can be handled more safely and more quickly by operators, while digital assistance means that they’ll move efficiently. This helps decrease wear and risk of damage to cargo during operations.
These cranes will facilitate the fast loading and unloading of large container vessels. The terminal they’ll serve, MedPort Tangier, will open in 2019. The terminal will chiefly handle transshipment for Maersk. This creates unique opportunities for Tanger-Med Port.
Although located in Morocco, the port is just 15 km across the straight from the European Union. With access to Atlantic and Mediterranean trade, and easy access to two major maritime shipping lanes, this makes Tanger-Med Port ideally situated to handle transshipment needs for both Europe and Africa.
This allows the port to connect various global supply chains, and make shipping between Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world swifter. Much of the rest of Tanger-Med is dedicated toward exports, allowing the port to serve as a gateway for Moroccan exports to the rest of the world. The port is further supported by free economic zones that further facilitate and attract business.
Whether you’re dealing with importing to Africa, shipping to the Mediterranean, or Moroccan exports, Tanger-Med has been a great boon to the entire Mediterranean area – allowing easier transshipping and greater flow of trade. International shipping to the Mediterranean is easier and faster than ever before.
