Whether you deal in import and export business or run a small business from home, sending and receiving packages form an important part of your daily life. Every day hundreds of packages are shipped all over the world. Your packages just form a tiny fragment of it.
In the midst of so many packages, it is hard to ensure the safety of each one, especially when there are right deadlines to maintain. It isn’t rare to find a broken or damaged package, and it is never done intentionally.
Whether it was something you were receiving from your exporter or something you were sending to a different location, a damaged item results in a big loss every time.
This is the reason why it is so vital that you check the package immediately upon. This doesn’t always happen because you might be busy when the package arrives and not have the time to open and check the package immediately. Most people save this for later because they are certain they will receive an undamaged package.
But you must not always believe this to be true, because, despite how carefully packages are shipped, they can always suffer damage in transit. It can never be guaranteed that the package will not be damaged at all. This isn’t because the carrier was lax, but because road conditions may not always be the same.
If the goods are very large, bulky, and heavy, the delivery person may require your assistance in unloading them or they could get damaged. Remember the cardinal rule of any delivery: never sign for any package before inspecting it. You must inspect every item to check if there is any damage.
It is recommended that you open each unit and examine, even if the cartons look fine from outside. This should be done in front of the delivery person because once the person leaves, it is too late.
If you find any damage later, it becomes your sole responsibility to file a claim. In such a case, you must immediately get in touch with the trucking terminal for further instructions or call customer care of the company for assistance.
If the driver doesn’t let you open the package for inspection, then you must carefully inspect the carton and note any damage, no matter how tiny.
On the bill of lading, you can note that the driver wouldn’t let you open the package prior to signing or that the carton had a hole or damage on the side. You must put aside any damaged package for carrier inspector, and ask the delivery person for a local phone number you could get in touch with.
