How Trucking GPS Helps Your Business Shipping

Edinburgh, UK - April 14, 2016: A Samsung S6 smartphone being used in a car, running Google's Maps navigation software for driving directions.

When we’re shipping your goods by truck, there will come times when you need to know exactly where your shipment is. Every element of the shipping process these days uses a GPS device. This means that ships, planes, and even trains use a GPS. (Trains may not need to turn left at Main Street, but GPS helps with tracking and scheduling.) Shipping by truck is no different.

Navigation: GPS helps truckers navigate, anticipate construction and traffic delays, and update schedules well ahead of time – whether they’re getting in early or something on the road has caused a backup.

Tracking: It also helps our customers to be able to log in and track exactly where their shipment is along its route. You won’t need to know where it is every minute, but you might need to know where it is ANY minute, and so we make sure we’re able to provide you a location and schedule estimate that’s updated. Keeping you in the loop can help you feel safe about your freight.

Acceleration: Shipping your goods – even via a complex transport chain that may involve a plane, truck, and train – means you can locate where they are on their route and whether they’re ahead of schedule or a delay’s occurred. When delays do occur, this accuracy allows us to make accommodations that can help catch a schedule up so that it’s current again.

Adjustments: GPS helps in even more ways beyond this. It helps on our end by identifying the closest vehicle to a particular location. Obviously, regular shipments are pre-scheduled with trucks assigned to that day and time. Sometimes, though, you need to make a less expected shipment or you need to ship something that’s time sensitive. GPS allows for identifying the truck that can most quickly pick up your shipment.

Not only does this get a truck to you more quickly, it also avoids waylaying other trucks on inefficient routes. That means we keep everyone else’s traffic moving smoothly at the same time. We use GPS for a lot more than navigation. While vehicle tracking allows truck transport to navigate, it also allows you to track your freight, lets us make better adjustments that eliminate delays, and can help you with last-minute and time-sensitive shipments.
