LTL Shipping and FTL Shipping: What’s the Difference?

LTL Shipping

LTL ShippingThe best way to determine how to move your shipment is by first assessing the size of the shipment, budget, and timeframe of when you need that shipment delivered. From there, you can decide which method will get your shipment from point A to point B.

Full Truckload Shipping

FTL shipping, is the best option for freight requiring the entire space or weight limit of a truck’s trailer (48 or 53 feet in length). These shipments usually weigh more than 15,000 pounds or contain more than 10 pallets of product. This is ideal for fragile shipments. Because there are no other stops to make, your shipment is also more likely to reach its destination on time.

Less-than-truckload

LTL shipping, is better suited for shipments that weigh less than 10,000 pounds and don’t require all the space in the trailer. LTL shipping, your freight will share the trailer with freight from other clients, and be moved multiple times before arriving. This method of shipping is advised for sturdy products that won’t be damaged easily. There’s also the possibility of your shipment arriving later than expected. Even being mistakenly unloaded with someone else’s shipment, though this can be remedied by placing tracking numbers, labels, and RFID on your shipment. On the plus side, LTL shipping will cost a fraction of what it would had you requested a full trailer.
