Cargo Traffic Increase in India Marks Increased Efficiency

Iron ore barge in IndiaIndia boasts 12 major ports. They just posted a 5% increase in traffic between April 2017 and February 2018. What does this mean? What does it tell us about shipping to India?

Cutting Inefficiency

The major difficulty in shipping to India has been the inefficiency of its ports. Their ports have become rather famous for simply being overwhelmed. It makes tracking cargo in India exceptionally important. Any delay needs to be addressed immediately or risk getting lost behind a long line of cargo suffering even further delays. This demands a talented and responsive shipping company with expertise in Indian customs law and good communication skills. We pride ourselves on being just this.

This inefficiency isn’t due to the people working at these ports. They have the manpower and the hard work. The inefficiency is due to a number of factors: the shipping demands of a large population, limited infrastructure, the distance from some ports to their industrial belts, and a need for overhauled equipment and data analysis.

Shipping in India is Improving

This 5% increase may not seem like much, but you don’t expect ports working at or near capacity to have any increase. At capacity means there’s no more room for increase. That indicates part of this increase is due to increased efficiency. That’s extremely good news for shipping to India, especially for commercial companies selling products there or manufacturing products there and exporting from India.

India has a longer-term plan of shifting some of its port infrastructure closer to their industrial belts. This will eventually make exporting from India easier and faster. In the meantime, improvements in efficiency mean more reliability when shipping to India. Access to tracking cargo in India and a shipping company versed in customs law and the ability to communicate it are still clearly musts. This is a promising sign, but shipping in India still demands an eagle eye and a responsive, responsible shipping company at your back.
